I started my Cobain trip at the Marco Polo, a no-frills motel on the gritty periphery of Seattle that Cobain frequented in his final days, when his heroin addiction controlled his life.

Cobain ended the show within an hour and forced the band to take a 10-day break. He flew to Rome to meet his family, only to overdose on Rohypnol on March 4. I loved that I was able to go from downtown Victoria to downtown Seattle without the hassle of dealing with a car. Luckily, we didn't encounter any issues leaving the city, but we passed by a gridlock of cars trying to go the other direction.

Death anniversaries are particularly hard to understand or to participate in. I spent years researching Cobain’s life, but there is much that still feels like a mystery, perhaps because suicide and addiction themselves are unknowable demons.
